Origin and History of Virgin Coconut Oil

Coconut trees are mainly distributed in tropical or subtropical coastal areas, and together with Camellia oleifera, olive, and palm are known as the four major woody oil plants. In the Philippines, the coconut tree is called “the tree of life”.

The coconut tree is not only a symbolic tree of tropical style, but also has a high economic value. The fruit can produce coconut milk, copra, and squeezed coconut oil. The shell fibers can be used as weaving materials. The leaves are also used as roofing materials by local residents. It can be said that they are used from head to toe.

About 4,000 years ago, people living on the islands of southeastern Asia have begun to plant coconut trees. Around 2000 BC, in Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and the islands scattered in the Pacific, there were already dense and dense coconut groves.

Coconuts in my country also have a cultivation history of more than 2,000 years. They are mainly produced in Hainan Island, and are also grown in Leizhou Peninsula, Yunnan Province and southern Taiwan Province.

Virgin coconut oil comes from pressing the white flesh of fresh coconuts. It has a fresh and captivating smell that makes one smell like a tropical coast vacation. And high stability, shelf life of up to 2 years, can withstand high temperature decoction.

Virgin coconut oil will solidify into a creamy (or lard paste) form below 24°C. It can be used to add essential oils to make suppositories, and it can also be used to make ice cream. It will melt when the temperature reaches 24°C. Therefore, in the European continent with higher latitudes, people call it coconut oil, while in the tropical regions of origin, people are more familiar with liquid coconut oil.

Virgin coconut oil has a long history in food cooking. It is known as “the healthiest cooking oil in the world” and even regarded as “the cure for all diseases”. In tropical island areas, virgin coconut oil has a history of more than 2,000 years, and is known as “the oil of life” and “universal food”. Filipinos refer to virgin coconut oil as “the drugstore in a bottle”.

India has also used virgin coconut oil as medicine since ancient times. Sri Lankans use it for cooking and hair care.
